Emergency Contraception in Northern Ireland

At Corrys Chemists, we provide fast, safe, and confidential access to emergency hormonal contraception at our Castlederg, Enniskillen, and Gortin branches. If you have had unprotected sex or your regular contraception has failed, our trained pharmacists are here to help discreetly and without judgement.

Emergency hormonal contraception (often called the “morning after pill”) is available from Corrys Chemists either with or without a prescription, following a private consultation with a pharmacist.

Available Options

  • Levonelle® (levonorgestrel) – effective up to 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex
  • ellaOne® (ulipristal acetate) – effective up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex

The sooner emergency contraception is taken, the more effective it is. Ideally, it should be taken within 24 hours.

How Emergency Contraception Works

Emergency hormonal contraception works by preventing pregnancy before it becomes established. It may:

  • Delay ovulation (release of an egg)
  • Prevent fertilisation of an egg
  • Prevent a fertilised egg from embedding in the womb lining

Emergency contraception is not an abortifacient. It will not end an existing pregnancy and will not harm a developing baby if it does not work.

Your Consultation

You can speak to a pharmacist in person at the pharmacy or initially by phone. Direct branch numbers are available on our website.

During your private consultation, we will ask general medical questions to ensure the treatment is safe and suitable. We will never ask about the circumstances that led you to seek advice — our focus is on providing safe and appropriate care.

If clinically appropriate, emergency contraception can be supplied immediately during your visit.

Safety and Side Effects

Emergency hormonal contraception is extremely safe. Some people may experience mild temporary side effects such as:

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Light spotting

If your period is more than 7 days late, unusually light or heavy, or you experience severe abdominal pain, you should seek further medical advice.

Ongoing Contraception Advice

Emergency contraception should not be used as a regular method of contraception. Our pharmacy stocks a full range of contraceptive products, and our team can provide guidance on longer-term options to help you stay protected.
