At Corrys Chemist, we are committed to ensuring the comfort, dignity, and safety of all patients during consultations, treatments, and clinical assessments in our Northern Ireland clinics. Our Chaperone Policy explains your rights and how we provide support during sensitive consultations.
What is a Chaperone?
A chaperone is a trained member of our staff who is present during a consultation or clinical procedure to provide support and ensure that interactions remain professional and safe. Chaperones help protect both patients and healthcare professionals.
When a Chaperone May Be Offered
- Physical examinations or procedures that are intimate in nature
- Consultations where patients feel uncomfortable being alone
- Any situation where a patient or clinician requests a third party for reassurance
Your Rights
- You have the right to request a chaperone at any time, regardless of the type of consultation.
- You are not required to give a reason for requesting a chaperone.
- Chaperones will always be trained staff who understand their responsibilities and maintain confidentiality.
- You may also decline a chaperone if you feel comfortable with the consultation being private.
How to Request a Chaperone
- In-person consultations: Inform the pharmacist or healthcare professional before the consultation begins.
We will make every effort to ensure a chaperone is available; however, in rare circumstances, it may not be immediately possible. In such cases, your clinician will discuss alternative arrangements with you.
Responsibilities of a Chaperone
- To provide reassurance and support to the patient
- To observe the consultation or procedure without interfering
- To maintain confidentiality of all patient information
- To report any concerns appropriately while maintaining professionalism
Confidentiality
All chaperones are bound by professional confidentiality and data protection requirements. Any information shared during your consultation will be handled securely in line with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
